A cordless platform is a family of tools, batteries and chargers designed to work together within the manufacturer’s stated limits. Sharing batteries is convenient, especially when you add a body-only tool later. Still, check compatibility for the exact tool and pack rather than assuming everything fits.
Write down what you’re likely to buy next. A drill, sander and garden tool may have different power and runtime needs. Look at the range available, local support and the complete cost of the tools you want. A discounted starter kit is only one part of that decision.
A matching voltage label or a battery that looks as though it will fit isn’t enough. Manufacturers can have several separate systems, and some tools need particular packs to work as intended. Use current manufacturer guidance for the model numbers you’re considering.
Be cautious with third-party adapters. They don’t establish that an unsupported combination is safe, and protection can depend on communication between the tool and battery. Follow the manufacturer’s charging, storage and transport instructions, and stop using a damaged pack.
Look beyond the starter kit.
A battery system is a set of documented compatible products. Think about the jobs you expect to do, rather than collecting tools for their own sake.
| Consideration | Ask before buying | Avoid assuming |
|---|---|---|
| Compatibility | Which exact packs and chargers are supported? | All tools from one brand share batteries |
| Your future tools | Does this system have suitable choices? | The biggest range is automatically best for you |
| Handling | How does the tool feel with this pack? | More capacity is always the most useful choice |
| Ownership costs | What will batteries, charging and support cost? | The cheapest first body is the cheapest system |
